Art-Train is for artists in communities of all sizes across the nation who are interested in building on their existing skills to collaborate in and with their communities through their local agencies, non-profits, and arts councils. During a free 3-hour training, artists will deepen practices around creative problem solving, equitable community engagement, and creating arts-based strategies to address recovery, rebuilding and ongoing community and economic development. The Council on Culture & Arts (COCA) Board of Directors is currently accepting applications for the following specific areas of expertise: History & Heritage Marketing Applicants should have expertise in the area specified, and be a resident of Leon County. If you’re interested in serving, applications will be accepted through June 30, 2023. Click here  to submit an application for these County appointed Board seat. This four-year term will begin on October 1, 2023. Applicants will be eligible to renew their seats if desired. COCA’s Board represents a diverse wealth of knowledge and includes citizens with expertise in the following areas: finance, marketing, volunteerism, history/heritage, practicing artist, tourism, and business. A current list of Board members is available by clicking here. The COCA Board typically meets five times each year with occasional additional special meetings scheduled. COCA bylaws stipulate that a Board member may not miss more than a third of the meetings in a given year. The COCA Board is a policy board. Members make decisions regarding funding and oversee the strategic and operational planning of the organization. We encourage Board members to become members of COCA but there are no fundraising requirements. The Board’s main role is to uphold the Section 265.32 of the Florida Statutes and to advocate for the organization and the larger cultural community. Located in downtown Tallahassee's Park Avenue Historic District, LeMoyne Arts is bringing the community together through ART! LeMoyne is a non-profit that relies on the support of our community and volunteers to provide exciting programming and art educational opportunities all year long. At LeMoyne, volunteers share their time and talents to bring arts experiences to the community. LeMoyne is seeking friendly, team-oriented people to assist with our monthly exhibits and special events (though please note that we have lots of other volunteer opportunities). Primary needs = Exhibit installation and de-installation: Assist the Curator in preparing the next exhibit (i.e., carefully move artwork, hang artwork, adjust lighting, move podiums, light cleaning, etc.) Special Event Support (2-4 per month): Help with setup & cleanup for events, be a greeter, a gift wrapper, a bartender/ barback, help with raffles/ silent auctions, etc. We love student volunteers! FINAL BUDGET NUMBERS FOR ARTS & CULTURE FUNDING as of 05.01.2023 The end result is formally agreed upon appropriations plus their respective "sprinkle lists". In total, 31 applications were funded, which included 11 BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, People of Color) organizations; 10 organizations new to COCA’s grant programs; and 22 underserved organizations with budgets of less than $150,000. Your advocacy made this possible. City funding was allocated for one year, and we ask for your support as COCA works with the City on its FY24 community arts programs funding request. We believe it's important to continue providing information about this request. Updates will be posted here and shared on our social media channels. ARTS ADVOCACY ALERT COCA's request for $300,000 to support local-facing programs is currently not recommended in the City's FY23 budget draft. This request will support local arts & culture programs for our families, kids, neighborhoods, and those with special needs and economic challenges in our community that can't qualify for tourism resources. These programs support City priorities, including Quality of Life, Impact on Poverty, Neighborhood Plans, and more. COCA's funding request has not been recommended. This request will primarily be used for regranting to arts and cultural organizations for local-facing programs. COCA does not have unrestricted regranting funds for local-facing programs and has qualifying applicants in the FY23 round that won't be funded unless City funding is approved. Pandemic recovery & Diversity, equity and inclusion through all programs and services. Neighborhood Plans through arts, culture & public art. Neighborhood beautification, safety and security through cultural programs and services activated throughout the City. Previous to 2016, the City provided up to $500,000 of support that could be used for this purpose. Currently, no City funds are available for redistribution through COCA's grant programs to support these kinds of programs. Our request will support local organizations & programs not eligible for funding through the Tourism Development Tax (TDT) including: Arts education programs | Arts & culture programs for special needs youth and adults Arts & culture programs focused on local services | Arts, culture history & heritage organizations with a primarily local focus.* Organizations that implement local-facing programming tied to City priorities include, but are not limited to: Motivating People Through Arts and Crafts programs for persons on the Autism Spectrum and with Neurodiversity challenges. “How are you in 2022?” An Update on COVID-19 and Leon County’s Nonprofit Sector

What: COVID-19 and the Nonprofit Sector 2022 When: 12 noon to 1 PM, EST; Friday, June 3, 2022 REPLAY HERE Webinar: “How are you in 2022?” An Update on COVID-19 and Leon County’s Nonprofit Sector The impact of COVID-19 on the Leon County’s nonprofit sector has been profound, and full recovery will take years. That’s a key finding from a recent local survey that will be shared by nonprofit leaders from the Council on Culture & Arts (COCA), the Institute for Nonprofit Innovation and Excellence (INIE), and United Partners for Human Services (UPHS). The findings will be presented at a webinar to be held on Zoom on Friday, June 3 from 12 noon to 1 PM. As a follow up to the original nonprofit survey conducted in 2021, this new survey from spring 2022 provides a current snapshot of the sector. COCA, INIE and UPHS gathered data from over 85 local nonprofits in Leon County, spanning all industries including arts and culture, human services, environment, animal services, and more. The webinar will bring local leaders and community stakeholders together to review the findings, discuss new pathways to recovery, and explore opportunities for collaboration and advocacy. CARES and ARPA funding provided by Leon County and the City of Tallahassee were instrumental in addressing immediate needs during the height of the pandemic; however, although there are signs of recovery in the sector, the survey results show that nonprofit organizations still have a long road ahead. Among key survey findings: · 100% of nonprofits have sustained a financial loss due to COVID-19; only 38% have been able to make up any shortfalls · 22% of nonprofits have had to terminate, lay-off or furlough employees · 65% of nonprofits have seen an increased need for services · 73% of nonprofits are unable to meet increased demand for services; 13% are unable to meet demand at all The upcoming webinar is part of a series of community conversations that connect the public to the work and impact of the local nonprofit sector. Tynan, UPHS When: Monday, June 21, 2021, 10:00 a.m. To 12 p.m. Where:  Virtual/Zoom TALLAHASSEE, FL. — Local nonprofit leaders from the Council on Culture & Arts (COCA), Institute for Nonprofit Innovation and Excellence (INIE), and United Partners for Human Services (UPHS) will host a virtual symposium on Monday, June 21 at 10 a.m. about Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) in Tallahassee and the surrounding community. The virtual event will include vivid and candid conversation about racial injustice, discrimination, and overall equality. Participants will register to participate in the full symposium that includes breakout groups, panel discussion and Q&A opportunities. The online event is free and open to the public. The keynote speaker will be Mariama Boney, President and CEO of Achieve More, LLC, a small woman and minority-owned consultancy. As a facilitator of organizational transitions, Mariama empowers individuals to move through discomfort so they can find shared purpose and create frameworks for constructive dialogue and action planning. The theme of the keynote address is “It’s Time Y’all: Transforming Community through DEI.” “When we exercise care and compassion towards ourselves and others, we can openly believe, honor, appreciate, celebrate, support, and achieve the equity, access, and inclusion, plus justice that we need, deserve, and aspire to for our world,” explains Boney. “Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion allows our level of curiosity and inquiry to deepen about each other - to provide enough energy for us to stay engaged in dialogue, in relationship, and in partnership.” As an active volunteer leader and alumnus of the ASAE Diversity Executive Leadership Program (2008-09), Mariama has served in several leadership roles for associations, non-profit, and alumni groups. She is the author of “VENT: I’m Worth It: A Journey to Refocus, Realign and Restore” and “VENT: I’m Worth It: Leadership Edition.” At the conclusion of the keynote address, attendees will move into breakout rooms for conversation and sharing. The symposium will conclude with a panel discussion featuring local community leaders as facilitators and panelists, including Taylor Biro, Christal Cherry, Darryl Jones, Antonio Montoya, and Del Suggs. The non-profit partners, COCA, INIE, and UPHS, are Tallahassee-based nonprofit organizations focused on strengthening and amplifying the sector’s voice through advocacy, education, community engagement and cross-sector collaboration. In response to current events and input from the community, this nonprofit cohort turned their efforts toward DEI and a community conversation. "The opportunity to have a safe space to share experience and learn from others is critical to the process of seeing change occur in our community,” explains Felina Martin, Executive Director, INIE. “Careful consideration was put into selecting the keynote speaker, breakout facilitators and panelists so that all of our neighbors can listen, learn, heal, share and act to change racism and discrimination." Amber Tynan, Executive Director for UPHS agrees. “It is essential as we look to establish an equitable system of care, one that centers client voice and experiences in our policies and practices while also setting the standard for our community,” Tynan adds. “We look forward to co-hosting this DEI Symposium to highlight areas of opportunity, as well as ways our entire nonprofit sector can be a driving force in achieving what’s best for those we serve.” Kathleen Spehar, COCA’s Executive Director, asserts commitment to DEI among sector leaders is key. “The pandemic cast a spotlight on systems, practices and policies that can sustain inequity. We choose to see what the light reveals and not let it blind us to this truth. This is an opportunity to learn, listen and find new ways leaders can shape the cross-sector collaborations needed to place equity as the core from which our systems operate.” N.B. We invite you to be part of "Sounds of Tallahassee," an initiative that promotes area musicians and connects them with new audiences. Any musician living in a 100-mile radius of Tallahassee is eligible for this opportunity. It's easy to participate, and it's FREE!
