Side B Society
Side B Society, an FSU student theater organization, presents a one-act play titled “Potty Training,” written and directed by FSU BFA Acting Junior Rachel Lieberman. Featuring a cast and crew entirely composed of FSU Theater majors, the show delves into the complexities of friendship. Set in the Conradi Studio Theater, performances are scheduled for October 6 and 7 at 8 p.m., and October 8 at 2 p.m. and 6 p.m. “Potty Training” is a thought-provoking bathroom-to-bathroom story that questions whether we are ever truly “potty-trained” in our relationships as we navigate through adulthood. Spirit of a Child Foundation
In 2023, the Spirit of a Child Foundation celebrates its 10th Anniversary Concert, marking a significant milestone in its journey. The Rocking Chair Horse
“The Rocking Chair Horse” explores the complex dynamics within a family spanning over 100 years, as daughters navigate the acceptance and rejection of their mothers’ narratives, bringing both anxiety and happiness. Each daughter’s passage into adulthood is marked by the bequeathal of a special heirloom: a prized antique rocking chair. The play’s pivotal moment occurs when Wanda’s daughter breaks free from traditional family roles to embrace her authentic self. Making Light Productions
Join Making Light Productions for the premiere production of “A Year with Frog and Toad” at The Tallahassee Children’s Theatre at MLP, a special theatre for young audiences. This 1-hour show, funded in part by grants from Arts for Autism and The Florida Autism License Plate, is based on Arnold Lobel’s beloved books and is perfect for kids. Follow the gentle and upbeat Frog and his best friend, the sometimes grumpy but always dramatic Toad, through four beautiful and musical seasons. Monticello Opera House Diary of Anne Frank

Javacya Arts Conservatory’s Elite Chamber Orchestra
Established in 1981, Javacya Arts Conservatory (JAC) serves as a college preparatory institute for individuals aged 3 to 18. TEODORA: A Musical Drama
TEODORA, a Two Regimes project in collaboration with the Foundation for Leon County Schools, presents a stirring musical drama about one woman’s resilience amidst the horrors of the Holodomor and Holocaust in Mariupol, Ukraine. Written by Diane Dupuy Whitney, TEODORA features 10 original songs that convey a compelling narrative of strength and survival. Despite its somber themes, the production offers a poignant and uplifting experience for audiences, incorporating paintings, photos, video, dance, and projection mapping to enrich the storytelling. Javacya Arts Conservatory
Javacya Arts Conservatory’s Arts in the Heart Concert Series 2022-2023 continues with a captivating performance featuring the Javacya Elite Chamber Orchestra and the Derek Menchan Trio on Friday, February 3, 2023, at 7:30 pm at St. Peter’s Anglican Cathedral in Tallahassee, Florida. Joining Menchan are talented musicians Kinga Augustyn on violin and Joanna Sobkowska-Parsons on piano. Together, they will present Beethoven’s iconic “Triple Concerto,” also known as the Concerto in C major, Opus 56. Special guests Dr. Jessie D. Owens on piano and Dennine White on flute will also join the ensemble. The program will feature additional masterpieces, including the 1st Movement of Mozart’s Piano Concerto No. 23 in A Major, K. 488, and the debut performance of Javacya alum Kenneth Hills, Jr.’s Piano Sextet No. 6. Southern Shakespeare Company and Tallahassee Community College join forces once again to present the fifth year of “A Town Divided,” a contemporary adaptation of Romeo & Juliet that delves into race relations in modern Tallahassee. Tallahassee Civic Chorale
Since September, the Tallahassee Civic Chorale has been diligently preparing for their fall concert under the direction of Dr. Leslie Heffner. This December, the Chorale welcomed guest instrumentalists to rehearsals to add the final touches to a repertoire of winter songs by American composer Dan Forrest, both new and familiar. Embracing their civic mission, members of the Chorale ventured into the community to share portions of the concert at various events and assisted living facilities. All their hard work and dedication will culminate in the Chorale’s Fall concert titled “A Dan Forrest Christmas” on Tuesday, December 13th at TCC’s Turner Auditorium. See their feature here.

Mickee Faust Club
“The Curs(ed) House of Ravensmadd” is an original and daring musical comedy presented by the Mickee Faust Club. Combining elements of Jane Eyre, Rocky Horror Picture Show, Monty Python, and What We Do in the Shadows, it offers a unique theatrical experience. Written by Terry Galloway and Stacey Abbott, with music composed by Peter Stopschinksi, the show brings to life Galloway’s gothic novel skits in a darkly comedic manner. Expect a variety of musical styles, from 1980s pop ballads to square dancing hoedowns, as well as plenty of absurdity and fourth-wall-breaking moments typical of Faustkateers productions. Despite its comedic tone, the show also delves into thought-provoking social commentary. Karen Robertson, an artist, operates from her purpose-built studio adjacent to her home, meticulously designed by her fiancé to meet her creative requirements. Currently, she’s gearing up for her debut exhibition at LeMoyne Arts, where her nature-inspired cast leaves will be showcased. Titled “A New Renaissance Gallery,” the exhibition marks a significant milestone for Karen, who feels deeply honored by LeMoyne’s selection. Museum of Florida History
Fishing is one of the largest participant sports in the world and Florida offers many chances for locals and tourists to pursue this popular pastime. Invisual Creative
Jeff Mitchell of Orchard Pond Plantation and Lydia Bell of Invisual Creative collaborated on a commissioned project for a local medical practice, creating portrait frames. They repurposed locally grown Black Walnut and Cherry hardwoods from the plantation, milling them into beautiful frames to showcase portraits of the same land. Each frame is handcrafted from gathering the trees to milling, constructing, and finishing. The frames highlight the wood’s natural colors and characteristics, enhancing the local landscape portraits. See their feature here.
The Sharing Tree
The Art Bus is an extension of The Sharing Tree’s commitment to fostering creativity, innovation, and collaboration while supporting children, families, communities, and the environment. Facing challenges during the pandemic and the need to find a new solution after relinquishing their building space, they conceived the idea of transforming a school bus into a mobile outdoor art studio. Prioritizing safe learning practices, social distancing, and open-air environments, the bus serves as an ideal platform to transport their mission. Diane Dyal
Diane Dyal has a small studio in a former bedroom of her small Tallahassee home. She enjoys creating in this sunny space with a cheery pink curtain that holds all her art supplies and gets visited by her two cats, Stripedie and Oliver. She admits this studio is a great place to work and even contains two easels, but her new four-foot-long canvases are in another room. She plans on working in a larger format in the near future. Tallahassee Bach Parley
A virtual concert features Valerie Prebys Arsenault playing Vilsmayr’s Suite II for scordatura violin, offering unique sonorities. Kim Jones performs a suite by Dall’Abaco for cello. The finale includes Arsenault, Jones, and Charles E. Brewer playing Heinrich Franz Biber’s Sonata X, the Crucifixion, also for scordatura violin. Theater with a Mission
Theater with a Mission (TWAM) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to portraying significant moments in Florida’s history through plays. Comprising actors, scholars, and cultural explorers, TWAM aims to highlight Florida’s multicultural roots. Their ongoing project, “Florida for Sale,” explores the state’s 200th anniversary of becoming U.S. territory. Recently, due to COVID-19, the play’s format shifted from an immersive experience in Tallahassee to a film, set to debut at the Loco for Love virtual festival on March 27, 2021. Lincoln High School Chalk Walk 2021
Under the guidance of Lincoln High School art teacher Marilyn Proctor Givens, five students completed a chalk artwork in honor of Florida artist Daniel Wynn. Led by student photographer Jaden Story, the team worked diligently over several days. Shena Kamata, Lincoln High School Chalk Walk
Shena Kamata, a digital student at Lincoln High School, decided to join the 2021 Chalk Walk event by transforming her home’s driveway into a canvas. She opted to recreate an artwork by Florida artist Gary Borse using chalk. Museum of Fine Arts (MoFA)
In the Fall of 2020, MoFA sought proposals from local artists for a new mural project. They were asked one question: What kinds of images do you think are missing from the MoFA campus? Sam McCoy’s and Christopher Rivera’s “Paper Trails” enlivens the museum’s courtyard with its pops of tropical color and collage-like composition. Over two weeks in February, McCoy and Rivera worked together to fashion this lush riff on the traditional landscape. See their feature here.

Tallahassee Downtown is an organization aimed at ‘making downtown work better.’ They collaborate with downtown businesses to promote downtown Tallahassee as a growing destination for development – business, entrepreneurship, ongoing education, resources, and entertainment for any individual. Tallahassee Youth Orchestras
The Tallahassee Youth Orchestras (TYO) and guest artist Avis Berry will present “Justice: From Siberia to Alabama” on February 21 at 3:00 pm. The concert, exploring human history and resilience, will feature TYO Symphony and Chamber Orchestra performing works by Copland and Leyden, along with traditional spirituals. Grant Peeples
Tallahassee artist Grant Peeples has stayed busy during lockdown by tending to his garden, raising chickens, and continuing his creative work. He shares poetry on social media, is working on a new album, and ran a personal marathon as a fundraiser. Grant is studying Shakespeare and hosts the online series ‘Clay Tablets,’ with the final episode airing on YouTube Live on February 16th at 8:30 pm EST. See his feature here.
Knight Creative Communities Institute
The Art of the Box Project by KCCI turns traffic control boxes into outdoor art in Tallahassee. Local artists’ works are printed on vinyl wraps, enhancing streetscapes. Launched in September 2020, it revealed six boxes and added three more in January 2021. KCCI, a local nonprofit, focuses on “sense of place” projects for economic mobility. The 2021 Community Catalyst Team continues and expands the initiative to enhance public art in the city. See their feature here.

Katy Fedore, the visionary costume designer for Southern Shakespeare Company, has been bringing whimsy and historical accuracy to productions for two years. Currently, she’s working on costumes for the May production of Twelfth Night set in the Ottoman Empire. See their feature here.
Spring House Benefit Concert
Tallahassee musicians Dr. Samuel Peliska, Natasha Marsalli, Ken Davis, Hunter Sanchez, and Ryan Snapp are teaming up with the Spring House Institute to raise funds for the restoration of Spring House, the only Florida residence designed by Frank Lloyd Wright. The musicians, known for their performances with regional symphony orchestras, aim to contribute to the preservation of this historically significant home by donating all proceeds from their concert to the Spring House Institute. Eliza Schneider-Green
Eliza Schneider-Green of The Silk and Cotton Shop shifted from making greeting cards to sewing masks full-time since March 2020 due to the pandemic. Working from her studio apartment, she has crafted nearly 10,000 masks and plans to continue until the demand diminishes. Del Suggs & Pierce Pettis
Pierce Pettis and Del Suggs have been touring the world and performing their own songs since they both graduated from Florida State. While they don’t tour together, for over 35 years they’ve returned to Tallahassee to present “The Almost Christmas Concert” this weekend! Celebrate Beethoven’s 250th birthday with a free live performance by Camerata South at the Thomasville Center for the Arts on December 17 at 6:30 PM. The concert features Beethoven’s unique Septet, with conductor Scott Speck discussing Beethoven’s musical legacy. Once Great Estate, a five-piece Americana band formed by Tracy Horenbein in 2018, blends dark Americana and Southern Gothic elements in their music. Tracy leads on vocals and guitar, accompanied by a talented lineup of multi-instrumentalists. They’ve performed at various venues and festivals. Scott Geraci
Scott Geraci, a Tallahassee artist, transitioned from photography to sculpture and installation during his art studies at FSU. For the past two years, he has been exclusively working with pen and ink on wood. His art has been exhibited at local venues, and on December 12, he is hosting a socially distant open studio and sidewalk sale in Midtown, offering visitors a chance to explore his studio and buy original pieces.
