Dr. Tom Miller of Florida State University will talk about the diversity of carnivorous plants in our area, about how they work and their ecology, and where you might go to observe these plants on your own in North Florida.
Most people have at least heard of carnivorous plants and maybe even grown a Venus fly trap at some time in their lives. The plants have fascinated scientists since Linneaus and Darwin because they upset the food chain by eating animals. But, most Tallahasseans are not aware that our local forests, savannas, and bogs are host to over 30 species of these interesting plants.
