OPS Museum Education Program Specialist: (Working Title: Volunteer Coordinator)

Division of Historical Resources, Mission San Luis

Tallahassee, Florida

$13.50 per hour, 28 hours per week

Mission San Luis announces the availability of one (1) part-time position to coordinate the volunteer program, assist with public program and event planning, and help with daily Education Department operations.

Primary duties:

  • Assisting with day-to-day museum operations, including:
    • Working with Manager of Programming and Audience Engagement to recruit, train, and retain volunteers for multiple areas of the Museum (including Education Department, Rentals, Visitor Services, etc.
    • Working with Manager and Education Specialist to recruit Education Department Interns, and working with Manager and Education Specialist to organize daily, weekly, and yearly volunteer programs and projects.
    • Maintaining regular contact with members of the volunteer corps, organizing special opportunities or information for them (includes maintaining volunteer Facebook page), and continuously researching new local volunteer organization opportunities.
    • Assisting Manager and Education Specialist with research and logistical needs related to the planning, research, budget preparation, development, implementation, and reporting related to volunteer participation in Mission San Luis’ annual Special Event, Family and Public Programs, guided tours, outreaches, etc.
    • Planning, implementing, and evaluating the volunteer program to establish and implement both short-term and long-term volunteer goals
    • Informing the public of all ages and abilities about the history of Mission San Luis through providing guided tours and programs
    • As the lead docent, organizing docented historic site tours with volunteer docents, regularly informing interpreters/Education Department staff about tour schedules, and working with Visitor Services staff to maintain tour records and calendars.
    • Performing research on the site’s history and its museum collections, as needed
    • Performing collections care and assisting in collections management, especially related to volunteer use
    • Assisting with day to day Education Department maintenance tasks, including program preparation and clean-up, cleaning of exhibit areas, filing and maintaining Programming Department records and electronic calendars, maintaining and organizing Department volunteer and education tools, supplies and publications; and other related tasks.
    • Record-keeping and administrative tasks, as needed
    • Maintaining neatness and cleanliness in all areas [historic and non-historic] including shared office, kitchen, and living spaces.
  • Assisting with other Department of State activities or initiatives as needed

Minimum qualifications:

  • High School diploma or equivalent
  • At least 6 months of experience in a professional museum position (a Bachelor’s degree in history, anthropology, archaeology, museum studies, public history, humanities, education, American studies, hospitality, public relations, or a related field may substitute for six months of the required experience)
  • Resume and cover letter detailing education and job related experience
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule, including weekends, holidays, and some evenings

Preferences:

  • A Bachelor’s degree in history, anthropology, archaeology, museum studies, public history, humanities, education, American studies, hospitality, public relations, or a related field.
  • At least 1 year of experience in a professional volunteer coordinating position or other relevant professional museum position
  • Ability to converse in Spanish or other languages and/or learn Spanish

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:

  • Ability to take complex historical concepts that are interpreted in written, visual, interactive, and oral formats and integrate volunteers into the programs
  • Ability to market and promote volunteer programs and recruit and retain volunteers
  • Ability to foster community involvement in programs or large projects
  • Excellent oral and written communications skills [including telephone and radio]
  • Knowledge of museum terminology, research, and programs
  • Public speaking skills and ability and willingness to give tours to large groups of people
  • Ability to be outgoing and engaging, and have excellent customer service skills
  • Ability to maintain a collegial relationship with other living history team members, volunteers, and staff.
  • Ability to relate to people of all ages and abilities
  • Ability to work with people and be a team player to accomplish goals
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a team
  • Ability to problem-solve, multitask, and pay attention to detail
  • Ability to work outdoors in various weather conditions including cold, hot, and inclement weather.
  • Ability and willingness to work in spaces and with objects that might be dirty or dusty
  • Ability to stand, walk, or sit for extended periods of time
  • Ability to bend, stoop, squat, reach, stretch, and/or twist
  • Ability and willingness to perform light housekeeping duties, such as dusting, sweeping, mopping and cleaning restrooms
  • Ability to lift, move, carry, and/or push items weighing up to 30
  • Ability to understand and follow established regulations, procedures, and policies
  • Proficiency in standard office software, including Microsoft Word
