Goodwood Museum & Gardens connects our community as a setting in which we preserve and share our history, enjoy the arts, and celebrate significant events in our lives.

Goodwood Museum & Gardens offers cultural programming set amidst historic architecture and heirloom gardens. The 21-acre property is an intact cultural landscape with 16 historic structures and expansive gardens reflecting 200 years of history. Programming includes music, theater, visual arts, permanent and special exhibits, and educational offerings for all ages. Moreover, through strategic partnerships, creativity and well-being intersect at Goodwood, contributing to a vibrant, healthy community with a high quality of life.

Goodwood Museum and Gardens is seeking an experienced Executive Director who is passionate about our mission and able to lead our organization with excellence. The Executive Director will be responsible for overseeing all aspects of the organization’s operations, including museum management, fundraising, program development, financial management, and staff supervision.

Our ideal candidate will be a motivational leader with a proven track record of success in nonprofit management. They will be passionate about our organization’s mission and committed to achieving our goals. The Executive Director will be a strategic thinker who is able to balance short-term needs with long-term planning. They will have excellent communication skills and be able to represent our organization to a variety of audiences. 

Responsibilities include the following:

Board Governance: The executive director will work with the Board of Directors to develop and implement policies and procedures that support the organization’s mission and goals. These duties include:

  • Assisting with Board recruitment, orientation certification and development.
  • Communicating effectively with the Board and providing, in a timely and accurate manner, all information necessary for the Board to function properly and to make informed decisions.

Museum Management: The executive director is responsible for the financial management, acquisitions, preservation, research, interpretation, and presentation of the museum in accordance with accepted museum industry standards and professional practices. These duties include:

  • Collaborating with staff, volunteers and professional archivists to maintain collection of artifacts and preserve the history of Goodwood.  
  • Developing new exhibits and events to engage local artists and community members that support our mission.
  • Supervising programming related to Goodwood Collections.
  • Designing and leading equity-related projects and programs that facilitate creative and inclusive experiences. 
  • Representing Goodwood before various professional organizations, governmental boards, committees and panels.
  • Assisting with evening and weekend events and bookings as needed

 

Organizational Administration: The executive director is responsible for the planning, direction, supervision, and coordination of actions by the staff. These duties include:

  • Supervising the Operations Manager, whose primary responsibilities include:
  1. Facilities Maintenance – 
    1. Coordination and oversight of staff, volunteers, and outside contractors to maintain historic buildings and other structures - balanced and coordinated with rental business schedules and objectives. 
    2. Liaison with Café tenant and provide facility support.
  2. Gardens and Grounds – 
    1. Coordination and oversight of staff, volunteers, and outside contractors to maintain gardens and grounds, including plant nursery operations.  
    2. Oversight and participation in garden projects and propagation efforts including plant sales, and other grounds projects involving grant or restricted funds.
  3. Volunteer Program management – 
    1. Develop and maintain program to attract and retain volunteers that provide critical support for programmatic and functional goals and objectives
    2. Supervise volunteer docents and museum tours
  • Supervising the Marketing and Programming Manager whose primary responsibilities include:
  1. Developing and implementing of the annual marketing plan based on grant obligations and organizational objectives, including promotion of fundraising events as budgeted.
  2. Working with our community partners to create marketing materials and ad campaigns, to align with grant funding sources and promotional goals. 
  3. Providing creative vision and support for existing and new cultural programming events. 

 

  • Supervising the Director of Rentals and Events, whose primary responsibilities include:
  1. Selling, scheduling and managing all events; including property tours and contract execution
  2. Collecting deposits and rental fees, and tracking receivable money.  
  3. Hiring, scheduling and supervision of Event Monitor staff
  4. Hiring, scheduling and supervision of cleaning and event setup staff
  5. Procuring and scheduling security personnel for events

 

  • Supervising the Development Director whose primary responsibilities include:
  1. Seeking new opportunities to work with community partners to achieve strategic funding goals for programmatic and historic conservation work through collaborative fundraising events that promote Goodwood’s vision and mission. 
  2. Actively engaging in the development of corporate partners and major donors to support ongoing and special projects. 
  3. Cultivating and maintaining relationships with both new and long-term members of Goodwood. 

 

Financial Management:  The executive director is responsible for budget oversight and reporting as well as grant management. These duties include:

  • Ensuring the fiscal integrity of the organization, to include submission to the Board of a proposed annual budget and monthly financial statements, which accurately reflect the financial condition of the organization.
  • Collaborating with the Board of Directors and other stakeholders to identify opportunities for revenue growth and cost savings, while also ensuring that the organization remains financially sustainable to the long term. 
  • Ensuring all bookkeeping tasks are performed on a timely basis.
  • Developing the annual budget in coordination with staff and the Executive Committee
  • Working with investment advisors at the direction of the Board to make changes to monetary accounts including transfers to and from such accounts.
  • Handling grants management to include:
  1. Managing comprehensive grant application calendar.
  2. Writing grant applications with assistance as needed.
  3. Maintaining or increasing funding through annual grants from the Florida Division of Arts and Culture and the Council Of Culture and Arts (COCA); 
  4. Ensure timely reporting as required; engaging staff as needed.

 

Qualifications Needed

  • A bachelor’s degree (Master’s Degree preferred)
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in nonprofit management or a related field. 
  • Strong leadership, communication and interpersonal skills. 
  • Demonstrated experience in successful fundraising and development.
  • Demonstrated successful grant writing and management skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with staff, the Board of Directors, donors, sponsors, and other stakeholders.
  • Knowledge of the principles and practices of project planning, implementation and evaluation.  (Additional experience with capital campaigns is preferred.)
  • Basic proficiency with Microsoft Office applications (Outlook, Word, Excel and PowerPoint) and Adobe Acrobat Pro or similar software.  Familiarity with social media platforms such as Facebook, Instagram and X.
  • Have a passion for the organization’s mission and values.  
Salary Range is $60,000- $70,000
