Born in Lexington, Kentucky, Nancy grew up riding bicycles, ice skating, and playing kick-the-can. She studied at the University of Kentucky between 1970 and 1975, collecting 120 credits in a diversity of subjects. Later, she refined her craft studying at Penland School of Crafts in 1979, 1981, and 1985 and Haystack Mountain School of Crafts in 1991. Nancy moved to Islamorada in the Florida Keys in 1978 where she apprenticed under Lee and Dorothy Shank for two years before becoming the resident
