The romance of Valentine’s Day and spirit of Black History Month merge during an event highlighting literary and musical traditions of a bygone era. In 1928 when she moved into the home, Luella Knott wrote lovely poems metered with careful rhymes and musical works with similar precision. Elsewhere free verse and improvisation were popular, reflecting the impact of the Harlem Renaissance and the work of Langston Hughes, a leader in the Jazz Poetry movement. “Poetry in the Jazz Age,” will recreate that vibrant era with actor/writer Summer Hill Seven reading Hughes’ poetry and saxophonist Dr. David Detweiler of Florida State University, accompanied by pianist Mason Margut performing early jazz. In honor of Valentine’s Day, guests will decorate a yummy treat, courtesy of event co-sponsors Lucy and Leo’s Cupcakery, and make a colorful folded book of Mrs. Knott’s poetry.
