Theater with a Mission
Theater with a Mission (TWAM for short) is company of actors, dancers, musicians, translators, designers, researchers, and history buffs who are all united by one challenging quest: to bring people face to face with Florida’s Spanish past, by reviving plays from the Spanish Golden Age. To do this, we’ve made friends with Mission San Luis and other historic sites in the Capital area, and we create one-of-a-kind performances that are deeply rooted in Leon County’s history and culture.
Here’s how we work. We find great plays that illuminate life in historic Leon County – plays that were written in Spanish while Spain governed La Florida, a period that corresponds with the greatest outpouring of dramatic scripts ever written anywhere, in any language. Then we translate those plays into clear English that’s spiced with extracts from the original Spanish. We dress them in eye-catching historic costumes, and set them singing to ear-tickling historic songs and dancing to toe-tapping historic dances. Then we take performances to libraries, museums, and historic sites, churches, senior centers, civic clubs, and Shakespeare festivals, so present-day people can meet vibrant characters from Florida’s Spanish past.
