Art in Public Places

The City of Tallahassee has been a longtime supporter of arts and culture in our community. In an effort to promote, encourage, and share our local art with residents and visitors, the Art in Public Places program was created more than 20 years ago. Since 1994, the City has contracted with COCA, the area’s designated arts agency, to manage and implement all aspects of the Art in Public Places program. COCA curates and installs rotating exhibits in the City Hall and Artport galleries. COCA also manages the City’s permanent art collection, which is displayed throughout City Hall and other public buildings as well as publicly accessible outdoor locations. While COCA works closely with the City on public art initiatives, we also offer support, consulting and resources to many other entities regarding public artworks and projects in our community.

Upcoming Exhibition Events

A Tempestry portrays a year of weather information for a particular place. Each individual row (made up of knitted, crocheted, or woven yarn) represents the high temperature on a particular day. 365 rows – 365 days. Starting in January, crafters use specific colors to showcase temperature. Each five-degree increment, from the hottest 121 degrees Fahrenheit to the well-below-freezing -30 degrees, is assigned a different color.

The National Parks Tempestry Project began in 2019 when Erika teamed up with the Tempestry Project team to recruit volunteers to create tempestries for national parks across the country. The Tempestry Project is personal and collaborative project of fiber art and environmental information all rolled into a sprawling community of friends, artists, crafters, teachers, scientists, activists, nature lovers, and more.
