To open this short concert, Valerie Arsenault will play selections from Vilsmayr's unaccompanied Suite II, written for scordatura violin – which means that the E string is tuned down a step to a D, opening up a new range of chords and sonorities different from the standard violin tuning. Kim Jones will play selections from a suite by the composer Dall'Abaco for unaccompanied cello. For the finale, Arsenault, Jones, and Charlie Brewer will play the dramatic Sonata X, the Crucifixion, by Heinrich Franz Biber, also for scordatura violin.
