The Joe Center for the Arts presents two exhibits October 8-30: Michele Tabor Kimbrough’s “Crucian Carnival Series” and Tim Gagnon’s “Atelier: The Instructor and His Students.” Opening Reception Oct. 8 from 6-8pm ET.
Through brilliant watercolor, Michele Tabor Kimbrough captures the ceremonial joy, color, and character of the Crucian Carnival, a month-long celebration in the U.S.Virgin Islands that dates back to the 1800s when enslaved Africans on the island were allowed time off to celebrate Christmas. The traditions of elaborate costumes, dancing and music have become part of the annual holiday celebrations on St. Croix. Also on display is Michele’s work that focuses on “Celebrating the American Dream” through community imagery, aviation, and other subjects including animals and florals. She is the owner and founder of The Art Factory in historic downtown Marianna. Tim Gagnon presents “Atelier: The Instructor and His Students”, pairing his own work with that of students he has taught to paint in his Panama City Beach studio over time. Works in oils include portraiture, figure study, and still life, presenting different painting styles and techniques. An added feature of this show will be an exhibit of several paintings (not previously seen at The Joe) from Tim’s series “Angelology: An Artistic & Theological Study of the Doctrine of Angels”. In these large and compelling works, Tim incorporates text, gold leaf, oils, and acrylics into narrative paintings that show us what scripture suggests angels might look like, while deepening our understanding and beliefs about the nature of God’s kingdom.
Free and open to the public.
