Contra Dance

Contra Dance

at Tallahassee Senior Center

This next week, local favorites the Long Forgotten String Band will be playing the tunes, and Richard Hopkins will be teaching and calling the figures. LFSB have perfected the art of playing for our dances, and of matching appropriate tunes to the dances. They are a pleasure to work with and to dance to.

The picture at the top of this invitation was taken by Larry Coltharp at the recent dance with George Marshall and Wild Asparagus, attended by about 160 people.

We feature contra dances (long facing lines), with occasional circle and square dances, to live traditional American music that has English, Irish, Scottish, French and African roots. We start with dances that are pretty easy to learn; as you gain confidence you will dance somewhat more complex dances. All dances are taught before they are danced, and the caller will prompt you as to the next move during the dance. No special clothes required, though we do recommend against high heels and boots. Dress for lively activity.

If you are new to this type of dancing, would like a refresher, or would like to help the newcomers, please come at 7:15 pm for a brief introductory lesson.

Come with a partner, by yourself, or with a group; you will likely dance with lots of different people during the evening.
