The Frenchtown Project

The Frenchtown Project

Presented by Wanderlust: Theatre on Location at John G. Riley Center & Museum of African-American History and Culture

Wanderlust: Theatre on Location is proud to present The Frenchtown Project, an original, pre-recorded, auditory walking theatre experience in conversation with the Frenchtown Heritage Trail, a set of thirteen historical sites that chronicle the story of Frenchtown, Tallahassee's historic Black neighborhood.

The Frenchtown Project will celebrate the rich and fascinating history of Frenchtown. As the community continues to face economic hardship and gentrification, the piece aims to amplify the stories of this vibrant and essential neighborhood and invite audiences to learn about and celebrate our local identity through this new creative experience. The entire creative output of the project will be commissioned work by exclusively local Black artists.

Original music will be composed by Tallahassee-based artist and activist Royce Lovett, who appeared as a finalist on the last season of NBC's The Voice. Connective storytelling text will be created by iconic local poetry collective Black on Black Rhyme. Mr. Lovett will also work closely with residents and students from local Griffin Middle School & Godby High School to include the talents and voices of young Frenchtown residents in the creative process of the project.

In cooperation and conversation with the neighborhood’s Riley House Museum, this socially distant, site-specific audio musical theatre experience will be free and downloadable for guests to experience safely at their own pace. Once on the Trail, guests will listen along to songs and stories based on the history of the very place they're standing! Creative work will be based on oral histories and research conducted by the Riley House Museum. The Museum intends to create programming to coincide with our project and will host a live performance version of The Frenchtown Project on-site at the museum.
