The rose is considered by many to be the most beautiful flower in the world.  It certainly seems to be the most famous, frequently appearing in visual arts, music, literature, religious iconography, and heraldry.

Many world-renowned artists, including Botticelli, Michelangelo, Renoir, and O’Keefe, have used roses for their physical beauty and their symbolic value of purity and sanctity.  Botticelli’s Birth of Venus, for example, depicts Venus’ sweat turning into roses as that fall into the sea.  Some people have claimed that a rose fragrance may even be a sign of God's presence (the odor of sanctity) or accompany the delivery of a blessing from God, such as a miraculously answered prayer.

Roses have also made their appearance in numerous well-known songs.  Most people can recall some of the lyrics from The Rose (Bette Midler), Red Roses for a Blue Lady (Wayne Newton), Kiss From a Rose (Seal), Love is a Rose (Neil Young, Linda Ronstadt), La Vie en Rose (Edith Piaf, Dean Martin, Grace Jones), or I Never Promised You a Rose Garden(Martina McBride).

Goodwood will continue a time-honored tradition of celebrating the rose by selling propagated Goodwood roses to the general public.  We invite you to be a part of this tradition and own a piece of living history by purchasing your very own rose bush from our Annual Old Garden Rose Sale on February 13 & 20 from 10-2PM.  We can’t promise you a rose garden, but we can promise you a rose for your garden or patio.  It might even inspire you to sing, paint, draw, or write.
