Capital City Concert Band Golden Jubilee Concert

Capital City Concert Band Golden Jubilee Concert

Presented by Capital City Bands of TCC at Turner Auditorium at TCC

The Capital City Band will celebrate its 50th anniversary with a free Golden Jubilee Concert on April 23 at 7:00 pm in TCC's  Turner Auditorium. Director Michael Grant has selected a program that reflects the band’s musical history with selections that include Sousa’s little known, but unquestionably appropriate, Golden Jubilee March, Rhapsodic Episode by FSU’s own beloved Charlie Carter, and Haydn Wood’s Mannin Veen. The highlight of the concert, however, is the world premiere of A Big Bend Rhapsody commissioned by the band to mark this momentous occasion. The composer, Robert Thurston, is well respected in the international band community and a “Tallahassee boy”. He is a graduate of Godby High School and the FSU School of Music and was inducted into the Marching Chiefs Wall of Fame in 2014, the group’s highest honor. Having recently retired from a long and successful career as arranger and composer for the United States Air Force Band in Washington D.C., he will be mounting the podium to conduct the band for the premiere of his new work.

In the lobby, prior to the start of the concert, attendees can pause and watch a video presentation showing the band’s history from its founding in 1966 to the present. Concert goers will also have the opportunity to meet and greet Mr. Thurston and Director Grant, as well as former directors of the band and past and present band members, at a post concert public reception.
