Confessions of a 21 Year Old is a solo exhibition of Ariel Raskin’s work in the Phyllis Straus Gallery.
This show will feature an accumulation of works all questioning emotional vulnerability. She is creating work based off my own personal experiences. In these works, she is disclosing her most secretive hopes, fear, struggles and desires, all in relation to the mundane objects they appear with. This show creates a connection between the public and personal, showing how intimate confessions can create an ironic line of communication. The truth is very important in her work because of the idea of “truth to self” and how that affects both the maker and viewer in terms of being confronted with my own authenticity. She experiments with what it means to be guilty of her own thoughts, and how confessing those thoughts in the work acts as a form of catharsis. The show will feature works in printmaking, photography, and sculpture/installation. All of the work is text based because text is harsh. It confronts the viewer, and demands to not just be noticed, but read.
