Presented by Phyllis Straus Gallery at Phyllis Strauss Gallery in Carnaghi Arts Building

Claudia Guerra's Statement:

My work functions as a reflection of the self, the role of women in Hispanic culture, and the duality of the mundane in life and death. Both secular and religious themes are elements in my work that mirror my upbringing and my opposition to certain principles from that nurturing. In efforts to detach women from obsolete societal labels, women are the focus in the work, a patron of confidence and empowerment. The narrative of the woman interacting with environments, that feel unrelated, confronts predisposed ideals we inherent. It questions the concept of tradition and why it is accepted as law.

These themes are obscured what feels like a composed scene, peaceful and passive at its core harbors destructive stereotypes, where outdated principals flourish. Primarily using loved ones as the vessel for my work, I create a conversation with the subject and myself. The trust placed between the artist and the subject allows an authentic portrayal of their essence, what I am familiar with. The beauty of existing but the burden of inevitably being a byproduct of one’s environment.
