The Archaeology of Bells

The Archaeology of Bells

Presented by Mission San Luis at Mission San Luis

Archaeologist Jerry Lee has excavated, studied and cared for artifacts on the Mission San Luis historic site for 30 years. Among the many interesting 17th century colonial items recovered from the site were bells, an iconic symbol of the Mission Period. From larger bells that tolled for celebrations or as warnings, to smaller bells that were primarily used as trade items, Mr. Lee will provide a unique archaeological perspective on these essential artifacts of life at Mission San Luis.
