NOTES ON THE PROGRAM

"The Art of Music...and the Music of Art"

Music by J.S. Bach, Enrique Granados, Franz Liszt, and Modeste Mussorgsky

Art by Paul Klee, Francisco Goya, Raphael, and Michele Tremaine

This multimedia presentation will show how music has inspired art (Paul Klee was inspired by the music of J.S Bach), and art has inspired music (Goya's tapestry cartoons inspired Granados’ suite Goyescas, and Raphael's painting Lo Sposalizio was the inspiration for Liszt’s Sposalizio). The cycle completes itself with the performance of Mussorgsky's Pictures (inspired by a memorial exhibition of the works of his friend Hartmann) accompanied by a silent film of over 50 original paintings by artist Michele Tremaine that were inspired by the pianist's performance of the work. Without words, the new paintings will tell the stunning story of the epic cycle originally composed for the piano. Pianist Jennifer Hayghe recorded Pictures on her commercially released CD, Paintings From the Piano, on the Centaur label and has performed them to critical acclaim for many years.
