Kermit Brown, native Floridian historian, storyteller, poet, will read from his collection My Life in North Florida, and from his poetry.
Kermit Brown will be the featured writer and poet at the October 08, 2019 meeting of Big Bend Poets & Writers at Barnes & Noble Books. Kermit will read from his collection, My Life in North Florida, short stories of growing up and young manhood in northern Florida, his native home. Kermit was born and grew up in the Indian Pass region of the Big Bend, back in the days when most people in his neighborhood didn’t have electricity or indoor plumbing. His storytelling brings those days vividly to life, as Kermit tells about hunting squirrels and alligators, exploring the then-wild Apalachicola River, sailing his own boat at age 10, working in the local oyster industry, and much more.
Kermit Brown has had a long career at the Florida Museum of Natural History in Gainsville as well as at the Museum of Florida History in Tallahasse as exhibits supervisor. Since his retirement in 1994, he and his wife Dianne have guided wilderness canoe trips. He has taught most wilderness skills, survival skills, leadership skills, and canoeing for couples. Kermit has also published several articles on canoeing and on Florida history.
