Grant Peeples brings Erik Alvar & Mark Russell back to Tallahassee to preview songs from his upcoming new release at The Junction@Monroe
Tallahassee native Grant Peeples has been called a ‘guitar-slinging poet’ by Music News Nashville, and UK’s Blabber & Smoke called him ‘a worthy carrier of the torch also held by the likes of Guy Clark and John Prine.’ A recent review from the Netherlands online entertainment magazine FolkForum.nl describes him ‘a pure storyteller, in the American folk tradition,’ and his show ‘one of those gems you will remember for a long time.’ Peeples is bringing that show home to the Junction@Mornoe for a special new release preview on Thursday, September 26th.
Accompanying Peeples onstage will be two virtuoso musicians, well known to Tallahassee audiences- Erik Alvar on bass and mandolin, and Mark Russell on violin. Both artists have performed with Peeples multiple times, in Tallahassee, and on tour across the US. Before moving to Brooklyn NY to pursue his professional performance career, Erik Alvar graduated from FSU with a Music Business degree, and earned a master’s degree from the University of Florida where he was fully funded as a jazz graduate assistant and performed extensively in Gainesville area venues. Since moving to New York, he is swiftly finding his way into the local music scene, working with bands such as Billy Strings, the Jim Hurst Trio, and Rebecca Frazier.
Virtuoso violinist Mark Russell currently hails from Cambridge, MA. He studied violin at Victorian College of the Arts in Melbourne Australia. A long-time resident of Tallahassee before moving to Cambridge, he played many area venues both as solo artist and accompanist. He wowed audiences with his innovative arrangements of such tunes as ‘Purple Rain’ and was known to fiddle and dance down the bar to the crowd’s delight. He has toured extensively around the world, incorporating musical styles from India, China, and Indonesia into his compositions and improvisations.
The trio will be performing songs from Peeples upcoming new release, due out February 14. The record will be produced in Austin TX by roots icon Gurf Morlix (Robert Earl Keen, Ray Wylie Hubbard, Lucinda Williams), who has produced four of Peeples’ previous albums.
