University Wind Orchestra (UMA) - Live Streamed

Presented by Florida State University College of Music at Ruby Diamond Concert Hall - Florida State University

The FSU College of Music is pleased to present conductor Richard Clary and the University Wind Orchestra in their first performance of the 2019-2020 UMA concert season on Friday, September 27, 2019 at 7:30 p.m. in Ruby Diamond Concert Hall.

The featured work is a World Premiere of a commissioned piece by the composer Jonathan Newman. The work, titled Pi’ilani and Ko’olau, is an “Imagined Ballet” to a scenario commissioned by the composer from Brooklyn playwright Gary Winter. It references an actual, yet phantasmagorical historical (and really quite tragic) event. The protagonist, Ko’olau, an Hawaiian folk hero, leads a colony of “leprosy" victims (now more respectfully referred to as "Hansen’s Disease") in an attempt to avoid government persecution, isolation, and extermination. This remarkably vivid historical “folk tale” is overtly colorful, passionate, and magical, utilizing exotic indigenous Hawaiian and traditional instruments. The balance of the program will feature works by the great French composer Darius Milhaud (“West Point Suite”), and Hungarian composition icon Bela Bartók's joyous and passionate setting of popular folk songs of Roumania ("Jocùri Poporale Romanesti”).

This is a ticketed performance. Tickets are $10 for adults, $7 for seniors and non-FSU students, and free for current FSU students with a valid FSU ID. For more information or to purchase tickets, please contact the College of Music Box Office at 645-7949.
