Tallahassee Contra Dance with Wild Asparagus and George Marshall

Tallahassee Contra Dance with Wild Asparagus and George Marshall

at Tallahassee Senior Center for the Arts

Wild Asparagus, a five-person band from Western Massachusetts, practically invented the modern contradance band, and has been touring continuously for over 30 years.  We are lucky enough to be on their regular spring touring schedule, again this year!  Drawing upon music from New England, the British Isles, and Canada, as well as classical sources, Wild Asparagus takes an original approach to the traditional dance music of our folk heritage. Using their unique blend of instruments, creativity, and skills, they offer a sensitive and powerful performance. As usual, master caller George Marshall is teaching and calling the dances.  George's specialty is teaching and calling the New England-style contra dances he has collected throughout the country. He is renowned for his knack of matching music to dance and for his smooth, concise teaching and presentation.

We feature contra dances (long facing lines), with occasional circle and square dances, to live traditional American music that has English, Irish, Scottish, French and African roots. We start with dances that are pretty easy to learn; as you gain confidence you will dance somewhat more complex dances. All dances are taught before they are danced, and the caller will prompt you as to the next move during the dance. No special clothes required, though we do recommend against high heels and boots. Dress for lively activity.

If you are new to this type of dancing, would like a refresher, or would like to help the newcomers, please come at 7:15 pm for a brief introductory lesson.

Come with a partner, by yourself, or with a group; you will likely dance with lots of different people during the evening.

Please bring a snack to share if you are so moved. We have snacks because people like you bring them. Also please bring your own water bottle, to cut down on paper waste; and walk, cycle, bus or carpool to the dance to further cut down your carbon footprint.

Lots of information about our dance community, and about old-time and contra dancing in general, is posted on our website at www.tallydancer.com. Please share this event with your FB friends.
