From the Cedar Chest: Southern Quilting, 1830s to Today

Presented by Gadsden Arts Center & Museum at Gadsden Arts Center & Museum

The From the Cedar Chest: Southern Quilting 1830s to Today exhibition will be on view September 14 – December 14, 2019 at Gadsden Arts, presenting quilts that were made in our region over two centuries. The exhibition tells the stories of a beloved art form that was utilitarian, cultural, and social, bridging the gaps between generations and finding commonalities among cultures. From the Cedar Chest is made possible by lenders from 18 private and four public collections.

Visitors to the exhibition will be able to share their own quilting stories through the Quilt Stories Blog, touch quilting materials at special touch stations, and make quilt-themed art activities in the ArtZone drop-in studio. Special programs will be offered through the run of show, including an Educator’s Presentation about the exhibition on September 14, a Public Quilt Making Workshop in the ArtZone on Saturday, October 19, and an Explorations in Quilting presentation by contemporary quilt artist Valerie Goodwin on Saturday, November 9.

The Southern Quilting Project is made possible by support from the Institute of Museums and Library Services, Florida Humanities Council, and Visit Florida, and our sponsors, Tallahassee Community College, Bell & Bates Home Center, Black Fig, and Penny and Moritz Dehler.
