Thomas University is hosting the works of Wayne Sides in an exhibit called The Boy Who Fell to Earth.
This body of work is a series of mixed media assemblages using found materials, photographs, and painting. The result is an exhibit of surreal and fantastical objects that read like a cross between folk art and Catholic icons. Each one is a strange mix of highly personal symbolism, including references to autobiographical events, art history, dream diaries, carnival sideshows and the southern landscape.
Sides considers these pieces, all untitled, as an extension of his photography. Many of them include photographic prints or image transfers along with found imagery. Seen as a group, the viewer is transported into a kind of alternate universe, in which the bizarre and mundane residue of life is fused together in small cabinets of curiosity.
