The Importance of Being Earnest

The Importance of Being Earnest

Presented by Irish Repertory Theater and Goodwood Museum & Gardens at Goodwood Museum and Gardens

Oscar Wilde, an Irishman, turns his brilliantly biting wit on the foibles of the Victorian-era aristocracy through the romances of two oh-so-proper gentlemen, Jack and Algernon, and their chosen paramours, Gwendolen and Cecily, who have their own curious ideas about what love requires. Add an overbearing Lady Bracknell with definite views of propriety (at least until huge sums of money are added), and the play becomes a recipe for social commentary filled with laughter.

The action moves from the Jubilee Cottage at Goodwood to the Side Porch (weather permitting), and then inside the Main House, filled with high ceilings and antiques, and the audience moves with it. There is also a special “Dinner and a Show” performance on April 5 that includes a scrumptious meal at the Rev Café, also on the Goodwood grounds. All other performances include a wine and cheese reception a half-hour before curtain on the lovely veranda of the Main House.
