String Orchestra Camp

String Orchestra Camp

Presented by FSU Summer Music Camps at FSU College of Music

When campers from around the world practice and perform together under the instruction of some of the finest orchestra instructors in the country, amazing things can happen. The two-week String Orchestra Camp immerses campers and works to develop their technical skills and musicianship. Each camper will perform in one of three string orchestras and one of two symphony orchestras or the chamber orchestra.

A string camper’s musical day begins at 8:00am and ends at 5:00pm. Each day is divided into eight class periods and includes an hour break for lunch. Students will also play in small chamber ensembles and attend daily sectional and master classes, music theory class, and supervised practice. Campers put down their instruments at 5:00pm, but the day isn’t over yet! Each evening, students can participate in recreational activities such as bowling, swimming, movie nights, ice cream socials, game nights and more.

Performance opportunities are an integral part of the camp experience. On the first day of camp, each student will complete a brief placement audition to determine their orchestra assignment. Each student will play in one of our string orchestras (the Amati, Guarneri or Symphony Strings) as well as one of our full orchestras (the Symphony Orchestra, Philharmonic Orchestra or the Chamber Orchestra). With these two orchestra assignments, as well as a chamber music ensembles, each student may participate in as many as three public performances at the end of camp!
