Writing for Resistance Spoken-Word Event at 621 Gallery

Presented by 621 Gallery at 621 Gallery

Tallahassee writers Bucky McMahon and Christian Perez host an evening of Spoken Word Art focusing on 'Writing as Resistance,’ as part of the ‘The Art of Resistance Exposition, taking place at 621 Gallery in Tallahassee during the month of October.  A number of area poets and writers will perform pieces in keeping with the theme of ‘The Art of Resistance,’ and talk about using writing as a means of response to the volatile socio-political climate of today. The free event starts at 7:00 pm at 621 Gallery at Railroad Square, 621 Industrial Drive in Tallahassee on Saturday, October 13th.
.
This is one of a number of events included in The ART OF RESISTANCE EXPOSITION produced by local musician, poet, and visual artist Grant Peeples and visual artist and professor Cynthia Hollis
.
“The purpose of the show,” Peeples has written, “is to offer an artistic alternative to the dark argumentative quagmire of the current political situation, and allow, rather, the transcendent power of imagery, symbolism and metaphor to speak to the hearts of the citizenry and its culture.”

Gun violence, the environment, the #metoo movement, election fraud, immigration and women’s rights are some of the themes that are developed in these works. The October event will feature visual art works from local, regional and national artists, as well as spoken-word, music, poetry and stage performances throughout the month.

Other events scheduled include ‘The Roots of Resistance’ a music event with Frank Lindamood on October 19th, ‘Performance as Resistance’, a live theatre event organized by Brittany Watkins on October 20th, and the finale performance, a music event with Grant Peeples on October 26th.  Artwork will be on display and available for purchase during each event, and during regular 621 Gallery hours, Thursdays through Sundays one to five pm, with the exception of the last Thursday in the month, the gallery being closed to reinstall for First Friday.

621 Gallery is located at 621 Industrial Drive, Railroad Square in Tallahassee.  ‘Writing for Resistance’ begins at 7:00 pm on Saturday, October 13th  and is a free event. The Official Public Reception for The Art of Resistance Exposition takes place on Thursday, October 11th from 6 to 9 pm, with guest speaker Diane Roberts at 7 pm.
