COCA Conversations: Dance - Creative Process & Collaboration

COCA Conversations: Dance - Creative Process & Collaboration

Presented by Council on Culture & Arts (COCA) at COCA - Council on Culture & Arts

COCA Conversations: Dance - Creative Process & Collaboration is a continuation of an ongoing gathering and discussion convened to crowdsource material and intangible resources that will connect and expand opportunities for dance-based artists in Tallahassee and Leon County.

This specific discussion on creative process & collaboration will explore and seek commonalities within the discrete ways/methods/practices choreographers and dancers create artistic experiences in collaboration with each other and sister-brother disciplines such as music, theater and visual art. Questions/curiosities/concerns that shape the form and flow of the discussion include: In the collaborative creative process... What is creative? How do you honor your own creative process?  How do you create a nurturing and rigorous environment? What is the role and responsibility of presenters/producers, audiences, government? How do we sustain ourselves and each other? What practices, steps or combinations work?

Starting the conversation is a panel of current or former dancers and choreographers with expertise in dance forms that range from West African to Ballet, Afro-Caribbean to Modern to Contemporary, Jazz to Hip Hop and in between. They represent the plethora of vocations and avocations in and through dance:  teaching/learning and training/educating, performing/ choreographing in concert and commercial dance settings; directors, writers, arts administrators, entrepreneurs, video artists, somatic educators and dance scientists, fitness/wellness coaches, recreational professionals, community organizers and activists.

COCA and the panelists realize that the term or label, “dance” may perpetuate hierarchies of aesthetics, the universalizing or normalizing of expectations and values, and the omitting of what distinguishes and makes valuable the contributions of specific cultural, social, and economic groups. We are committed to creating a safe space in which the universality and singularity of lived experience are upheld. We are working to make sure that all expressions of life are available to be seen, felt, and heard. We welcome your feedback.

COCA Conversations: COCA Conversations: Dance - Creative Process & Collaboration will be held on April 16, 2018 from 6:00 pm-8:00 pm at COCA (816 S. Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd, Tallahassee, FL 32301)
