The age-old games of power, politics, and sex are replayed in Claudio Monteverdi's opera L’incoronazione di Poppea or The Coronation of Poppea. Inspired by the story of the Roman Emperor Nero, his ambitious mistress, Poppea, and Nero's estranged wife, the Empress Ottavia, we retell a story that is as old as time. Baroque specialist Daniel Beckwith leads an orchestra of period instruments in support of our contemporary treatment of this story of seduction and betrayal. Some things never change.
