Opening of "Pastels and Other Passions" paintings by Steve Johnson at Jefferson Arts Gallery

Presented by Jefferson Arts Gallery at Jefferson Arts Gallery

Steve Johnson has dabbled in acrylics and watercolor, eventually moving to his favorite medium, pastels, after seeing the work of some local pastel artists. Steve has immersed himself in learning everything art. Studying other artists work, taking workshops and building relationships with other artists whom he says was the most influential key to his development as an artist. The” 4 W’s”, the what, when, where, and why of it all as he calls it, is the process he took to find his voice, and discover what it is about putting marks and colors on a blank piece of paper or canvas that made him feel like a kid opening a birthday gift so eager to see what’s inside. Steve also has a passion for music, playing guitar since his boyhood years and believes that music and visual art is our heart language that helps join us to the world of nature and humanity. He says that music and visual art are married as he sees rhythm, color, and geometric design in both, even though both use this trinity in different ways to express the same messages. Artists use this infinite pallet of expressions applying their own unique fingerprint to it, no two being the same. Steve says his eye has developed a looser more abstract style, giving him more freedom of expression and allowing him to get closer to what his heart is saying when his mind or technical ability have trouble keeping up. He says that applying to manmade forms the “seemingly” random nonsymmetrical designs of nature just seems like the purest most natural thing for an artist to do…which he says is probably why artists (some without even realizing it) are drawn to old buildings, and crooked light poles because mother nature has bent these things to fit her canvas and puts this blueprint in the soul of every nature loving artist and art lover alike. Steve’s works have touched the hearts of people across the country with his paintings in their homes. He lives with his wife Laurie and his K9 companion Maggie in Monticello Fl. He is active in the local art scene and a President of Jefferson Arts Gallery and is a member of First Coast Pastel Society, First Coast Plein Air Painters and founder of The Monticello Plein Air Painters Society….
