A two day event, December 1-2, 2017, commemorating the 200th Anniversary of the Scott Massacre of 1817
The Scott Massacre was the first U.S. defeat of the Seminole Wars. A force of several hundred Creek, Seminole, and Black Seminole warriors attacked a U.S. Army boat commanded by Lt. Richard W. Scott. The battle ended with the deaths of Scott, 34 U.S. soldiers, 6 women and 4 children and led President James Monroe to order Maj. Gen. Andrew Jackson to invade Florida. This event led to the acquisition of Florida from Spain in 1821.
The event will recognize both sides in this battle with living history, exhibits on area history and archaeology, memorial services, tours, crafts, a variety of food vendors and much more.
