Documentary Screening: The Loving Story

Documentary Screening: The Loving Story

Presented by Florida Historic Capitol Museum at Florida Historic Capitol Museum

The film tells the story of Mildred and Richard Loving, who were arrested in Virginia in 1958, for violating a state law that banned marriage between people of different races. Such laws had been on the books in most states since the seventeenth century, but the Lovings never expected to be woken up in their bedroom in the middle of the night and arrested.

The subsequent legal battle, Loving v. Virginia, became a landmark civil rights decision of the United States Supreme Court, which invalidated laws prohibiting interracial marriage. Through little-known filmed interviews and photographs shot for Life magazine, the documentary brings to life the Lovings' marriage and the legal battle that followed.

Film will begin at 6 p.m. (77 minute runtime), with a discussion to follow led by Reginald K. Ellis, Associate Professor of History at Florida A&M University, and Jovita Woodrich (MSW), a Board member for The Village Square, and a core member of its Local Color Initiative-a project to address growing racial tensions in the national political dialogue by connecting neighbors when a crisis occurs.
