Midtown Reader Book of the Month Club - Dispatches from Syria

Presented by Midtown Reader at Midtown Reader

This month's book club will be led by C.D. Davidson-Hiers, a staff writer and news assistant at the Tallahassee Democrat. The Morning They Came for Us is a tour de force of war reportage that examines the brutal, internecine conflict in Syria and the culpability of outside powers through the stories of ordinary men, women, and children who have been made to suffer. A journalists' perspective should lend to an interesting and educational discussion; don't miss this event! Wine and refreshments will be served, all ages are welcomed, and we will be offering 10% off the paperback copy of the book until book club.

Praise for The Morning They Came for Us:

“Heartbreaking…[A] haunting reminder of what the Syrian revolution, ultimately, is about…Amid our obsession with ISIS, these tales are worth remembering.”
- Anand Gopal, New York Times Book Review

“Necessary, difficult and elating…[C]lear-eyed and engaged in the best sense―engaged in the human realm rather than the abstractly political.”
- Robin Yassin-Kassab, The Guardian

“It is crucial to reveal the human stories behind the news―and…Janine di Giovanni does this with heartbreaking eloquence.”
- Elif Shafak, Financial Times

“A must read filled with bitter realities.”
- Denise Hassanzade Ajiri, Christian Science Monitor

“What life is like for ordinary Syrians who have stayed behind is the subject of Janine di Giovanni’s heartbreaking book…[U]nsensational but unsparing…[I]t is individual stories, rather than victims counted in the millions, that reveal the terrible cost of leaving dictators in place for the sake of ‘stability.’ ”
- Joan Smith, Observer
