FSU Faculty Recital - Justin Benavidez, tuba

The College of Music is pleased to present the first faculty recital of the 2017-2018 season, featuring one of our newest faculty members, Dr. Justin Benavidez, tuba, assisted by faculty accompanist, Dr. Deloise Lima at the piano. The performance will take place on Thursday, August 31, 2017 at 7:30 p.m. in Longmire Recital Hall. Admission is free and open to the public. Works for the evening include: Schumann's Drei Romanzen, Op. 94, Bach's Sonata for Flute and Piano in E-flat Major, BWV 1031, and Hindemith's Sonata for Tuba and Piano (1955), as well as selections from Dmitri Shostakovich and Astor Piazzolla.

ABOUT THE ARTISTS
Dr. Justin Benavidez is the Assistant Professor of Tuba and Euphonium at Florida State University and leads an active career as a performer and educator. He previously held a similar professorship at the Ithaca College School of Music. Dr. Benavidez is the Tuba-Artist Faculty at the Round Top Summer Music Festival and is the acting Principal Tuba of the Syracuse Symphoria Orchestra and the Syracuse Opera.

Dr. Benavidez has been a prizewinner at several national and international solo competitions and is a past winner of the prestigious Aspen Music Festival Concerto Competition. He was the first tubist to receive both the New Horizons Fellowship and the Orchestral Fellowship at the Aspen Music Festival where he held the Principal Tuba chair in the Aspen Festival Orchestra. He was the distinguished recipient of the Horace H. Rackham Merit Fellowship for Doctoral Studies at the University of Michigan. Dr. Benavidez is a B&S/Meinl Weston artist and clinician.

Collaborative pianist Deloise Chagas Lima was born in Curitiba, Parana, Brazil. She began piano study at the age of nine and at age eleven she gave her solo debut at the School of Music and Fine Arts in Parana, Brazil, where she later received her Bachelors Degree in Piano, Organ, and Music Education, obtaining a gold medal as the most outstanding student during the course of her degree. Following her graduation she studied English at Newbold College in England while completing a Performance Certificate in piano from Trinity College of Music. Dr. Lima is also an Associate of the Royal College of Music in organ performance. She received the Master of Music degree in piano performance and literature at the University of Notre Dame, and the Doctor of Music degree in Piano Accompanying from the Florida State University.

Dr. Lima has participated in master classes with Jacques Klein, Michael Young, Ernst Ulrich von Kameke, Pierre Cochereau, Alexander Toradze, and Martin Katz, among others. In Brazil, Dr. Lima was on the faculty of the Escola de Musica e Belas Artes do Parana where she taught accompanying and coached chamber music for nearly twenty years. A sought-after accompanist and chamber musician, she has performed extensively throughout Brazil with many nationally recognized singers and instrumentalists. She was also the pianist of the Minas Gerais Symphony for two seasons, and was a soloist with that orchestra and the Curitiba Chamber Orchestra. Her performances as an accompanist have taken her to Europe, the United States, and South America. Deloise Lima was named Assistant Professor of Collaborative Piano at the College of Music of Florida State University in 2005.
