Public Reception for Picture Tallahassee: Where We Live, Work & Play

Presented by Council on Culture & Arts (COCA) at AIA Florida

From the advent of photography, practitioners of the art form have held an affinity for architecture. Evidence of this exists from 1826 in the earliest surviving photograph of a real-world scene. French inventor, Joseph Nicéphore Niépce developed a process for recording light and fixing it as an image on paper. His first composition was a view of city buildings taken from the window of his studio. Nearly 200 years have passed and in that time, architecture and photography have continued to evolve and converge, illustrating our culture and our shared humanity.

Picture Tallahassee: Where We Live, Work & Play is a juried, fine art photography exhibition that celebrates community design as an art form. On display are 26 images featuring architecture in the Tallahassee area. Diverse in style and subject matter, some of the photographs convey the impressive weight of concrete and steel, while others capture the delicacy of nature reflected in glass. By exhibiting artful images of the physical structures where we live, work, and play, this exhibition demonstrates that our built environment has the power to summon an emotional connection in people.

This exhibition is presented by the Florida Association of the American Institute of Architects (AIA Florida) and is made possible through the partnership of the Council on Culture & Arts (COCA) with additional support from the Florida Foundation for Architecture and AIA Tallahassee.

On view from Jan 27th - March 31st at the headquarters of AIA Florida at 104 E. Jefferson St., this exhibition is open to the public during regular business hours: M-F from 9:00 - 5:00. More than 90 artworks were submitted for consideration and all of them will be exhibited in a specially designed online gallery that can be found by visiting www.aiafla.org.
