Those who have always wanted to get inside the head of Jesus should be intrigued by Andrew Lloyd Webber’s attempt to do just that in the 1970 Broadway rock musical Jesus Christ Superstar, which opens at the Quincy Music Theatre Friday, October 7th.
This iconic musical, which tells the story of Jesus’ last days as depicted in the Gospels, has no spoken dialogue—it is sung throughout. The rock songs chronicle the last week of Jesus’s life and use modern psychology to highlight the interpersonal struggles between Jesus and Judas Iscariot.
"We have focused our production on the question—in a modern world—of how you would handle it if Jesus returned,” explains popular regional Director Naomi Rose-Mock. “Our version of Jesus Christ Superstar is set in the near future in a sterile corporate world. The disciples are depicted as more free spirited and artisanal, while Pilate becomes a small town politician and the Pharisees, monochromatic corporate peons.”
Jesus Crist Superstar runs for two weekends, Oct. 7-9 and 14-16, at the Quincy Music Theatre—the area’s only all-musicals theatre. Tickets are on sale now, just $15 for students/seniors/military and $18 for adults. Evening performances are at 7:30 p.m. and matinees are at 2:30 p.m. on Sundays and the second Saturday, October 15.
