On the eve of the 200-year anniversary of the Territorial Legislative Act seeking a new capital city for Florida, the Florida Historic Capitol Museum will host guest speaker Rodney Kite-Powell to explore significant events and themes from the Territorial Period using historic maps. The acquisition of East and West Florida from Spain left a legacy of two capitals – Pensacola and St. Augustine. Just three years later in 1824, the state and the country were changed by the decision to centralize Florida’s government. Enjoy lunch with us to mark this moment as we approach the 2024 bicentennial commemoration of the selection of Tallahassee as Florida’s capital city. The program and lunch are free and open to the public, but seating is limited.

Rodney Kite-Powell is the Director of the Touchton Map Library at the Tampa Bay History Center and is the author of: History of Davis Islands: David P. Davis and the Story of a Landmark Tampa Neighborhood, and Tampa Bay’s Waterfront: Its History and Development.
