Panhandle Archaeological Society at Tallahassee (PAST) Monthly Meeting

Presented by Panhandle Archaeological Society at Tallahassee (PAST) at Goodwood Museum and Gardens

Topographical features and built environments inform our sense of place and are likely part of the reason PAST members love Tallahassee and are so fascinated with archaeology.

Tallahassee-Leon County Geographic Information Systems (TLCGIS) has freely provided valuable consultation to PAST members in researching archaeological sites. But wait, there’s more! They have created a unique and easy to use tool, Explore Historical Tallahassee “History in Your Hands” website, that you need to know about. Want to see what your neighborhood used to look like? There is a comparison swipe map that will place 2022 aerial imagery side by side with historical aerial imagery from 1937, 1941, and on through 50’s and 90’s maps.

Whether you would just like to surf through a gallery of local historical maps and images, find all the State Historical Markers in Leon County, see historical churches, railroads, and homes, or create your own custom map this utility is something you need to know about.

At our May 9 meeting, we will have a conversation with Marcus Curtis, the primary content creator for the “History in Your Hands” website. Mr. Curtis, who is a historian and wizard with maps and historical images, will demonstrate this easy-to-use utility.
