Joan Kanan began her second career as an artist after years of working in education with the state and local governments. Working with clay, acrylics, and oil, Joan’s style carries but is characterized by her love of bold colors and bold statements that she reflects in her work. Much of Joan’s subject matter is taken from her travels, reflecting the beauty of the coastal south. Her work has been featured in galleries and shows around Tallahassee, Apalachicola, and South Georgia, which include the Annual Art at Gadsden show, Westminster Oaks, FAMU, the Apalachicola Art and History Center, and the Senior Artist Showcase at the Tallahassee Senior Center. Nomads Gallery in Tallahassee and the Waterfront Gallery in Apalachicola, Florida, have also displayed some of Joan’s pieces. Joan also served as president of the Wiregrass Art Gallery in Thomasville, Georgia, from January 2021 until April 2022.
