Private Desert

Private Desert

Presented by Tallahassee Film Society at All Saints Cinema

Daniel, a former police academy instructor who has been suspended after a violent and infamous outburst, finds comfort and contentment in an online relationship with Sara, a genderfluid blue-collar worker who lives by her male birth identity during the day, who makes him feel both seen and ambitious for the future. When she disappears one day with no trace, Daniel sets out, leaving his ailing father to find Sara, as well as a life they can share together, one private, one all to themselves.

This beautiful and affirming exploration of queerness in regions where discriminatory laws and hate crimes are rampant, such as Brazil itself. Director Aly Muritiba operates the film to display Daniel and Sara living in opposite worlds, bringing the two together to articulate their likenesses and their magnetic draw, with actors Antonio Saboia and Pedro Fasanaro driving the passionate chemistry needed for a film like this.
