Even as technology advances and the powers that be will attempt to sever the soul and will of the working class, the human spirit prevails, its design as intricate and commanding as the binary of machines.
In the hills of Burundi, a group of escaped coltan miners creates an oasis in a technological graveyard. Eager to punish the corrupt and domineering Authority, which abuses the land for its resources and seeks to control its locals through soul-crushing, robotic controls, the group seeks to establish a hacker coalition to uproot the evil that has taken over their home. When one of the miners meets an intersex runaway, also incredibly intuned and talented in technology, they experience a binary-altering connection that will inspire them to fight for the rights of their nation, and find camaraderie in one another.
From co-directors Saul Williams, the musical artist behind the 2016 album MartyrLoserKing, and Rwandan-born cinematographer Anisia Uzeyman, "Neptune Frost" blends the aesthetics and capitalist and colonialist significances of cyberpunk with Afrofuturism to bring a gorgeous feat of a musical, one that is expressly its own, and one of the most visually ambitious films of 2021.
