Forgotten Diety -- Celebrating the Day of the Dead

Forgotten Diety -- Celebrating the Day of the Dead

Presented by The Joe Center for the Arts at The Joe Center For The Arts

Featuring the artwork of artist, Javier Arreguin Villegas, this event explores the  traditions of Dia de los Muertos. The Day of the Dead (el Día de los Muertos) is a traditional Mexican holiday that takes place between October 31 and November 2, when it is believed the souls of departed family members can return to eat, drink, dance, and celebrate with their families. Festivities will unfold over two days in an explosion of color and life-affirming joy. Yes, the theme is death, but the point is to demonstrate love and respect for our deceased family members.  Join us in this joyous celebration at The Joe Center for the Arts from Oct. 29--Nov. 4th for a series of workshops and activities that will immerse you in these traditions. Create "sugar skull" artwork, make Pan de Muerto (bread for the dead), explore the concept of death and remembrance on Saturday, Oct. 29, and  add a photo of a loved one to the Ofrenda (altar). Javier will present an artist talk sharing how these traditions inform his artwork on Tuesday, Nov. 1st Events are free or request a small donation. On Sunday, October 30. from 12-6pm, join us for a community celebration featuring art, music, food and special vendors.  This event is part of our Enlighten Artist Series which promotes creativity, features new art forms, provides perspectives on larger community issues, encourages freedom of thought and connects with the broadest audience possible.
