History at High Noon: Havana, Florida—Shade Tobacco Capital of the World

Presented by Museum of Florida History at Museum of Florida History

Leigh Watson Healy and Donna Warlick will present a newly made 30 minute video about the Planter’s Exchange, a historic building in Havana, which is now owned by the Havana History & Heritage Society. The Society’s museum was created in 2017 and is located in the Planter’s Exchange complex.

In 1926, in support of the emerging area shade tobacco industry, two entrepreneurial brothers, Tom and Ben Gregory, founded a farm supply store in downtown Havana, Florida they named The Planters Exchange. They incorporated in September 1931 bringing onboard three additional partners to The Planters Exchange. This is the story of how The Planters Exchange grew into the premier manufacturer of fertilizer, and supplier of pesticides, agricultural and general farm supplies needed by the shade tobacco industry in Gadsden County and neighboring communities for over 50 years.
