Tallahassee Watercolor Society Don Taylor Two-Day Plein Air Workshop

Tallahassee Watercolor Society Don Taylor Two-Day Plein Air Workshop

Presented by Tallahassee Watercolor Society at AHA Gallery

Don Taylor, world class instructor, past president of the Southern Watercolor Society and award winning artist, has traveled around the world keeping watercolor journals of his adventures. In this workshop he shares his methods and "secrets" to capturing the moment in watercolor. Taylor has journeyed all over the world with his sketchbook creating small masterpieces that capture the sights and emotions of the scene he is experiencing. He loves to share his knowledge with his students. His paintings employ a combination of realism and impressionism, with a touch of abstract design. Teaching students to evoke the same feeling to the viewer that they felt when first seeing the subject, i.e., the sense that there is more to the subject than a mere rendering. Lights, darks, bold colors, lost edges and more come together to recreate that feeling while applying the illusion of detail so that viewers can use their imagination to complete the image. Students become adept at Don's “less is more” philosophy. Classes will be held at the Havana AHA (Artists Helping Artists) workshop as well as in outdoor Havana. Individual mentoring will occur as well as group instruction. Students are responsible for their own supplies and sketchbook. In case of rain, the class may be held on October 29-30.

OVERVIEW FOR PLEIN AIR JOURNALING WORKSHOP
The workshop will be for 2 days in Havana FL with an indoor facility available for initial coordination and basic instruction for the 1st hour. We will first go over general guidelines for how to look for ideal subject matter (the hardest part), doing a maximum 1 minute sketch of the basic composition, and immediately starting the painting. As soon as the paint begins to dry, we then apply the ink to strategically bring out the major details only.

The concept is to finish the sketch in less than one hour. This will allow you to capture the essence of your travel memories within the time constraints usually encountered.

Don will get started with individuals at different locations and then continually move around to work with everyone to help with any problems they may have.

This is not a “how to paint” workshop, rather a “how to organize, compose, and work quickly” workshop! It becomes addictive the more you do it, and helps you in composing your studio paintings if you use photographs.
