Hidden Orchestral Gems

Presented by Summer Sinfonietta at First Presbyterian Church

The Summer Sinfonietta presents its season premiere at First Presbyterian with an evening of little-known works by otherwise well-known composers. The concert opens with the spiteful Overture on Tales of the Fair Melusina by Felix Mendelssohn; one of the composer’s favorite works, the overture paints a musical narrative of a story from Medieval French folklore of a water spirit who was half-woman, half-serpent, a duality that is cleverly represented within the music. Nikolay Rimsky-Korsakov’s Fantasia on Serbian Themes is an early but masterful work by one of classical music’s most exciting composers. The concert concludes with a rare performance of Igor Stravinsky’s first published piece, the large-scale Symphony in E-flat; while Stravinsky’s later music became quite advanced and complex, this piece owes much of its influence to the lyrical Romanticism of Tchaikovsky, Wagner, and Rimsky-Korsakov (the work’s dedicatee, with whom Stravinsky had just finished an apprenticeship).

The Summer Sinfonietta was formed in 2014 to provide a creative outlet for orchestral musicians in Tallahassee during the summer months. Students from Florida State University play in, conduct, and organize the ensemble, which is dedicated to providing free, casual, energetic concerts to the Tallahassee community. Matthew Bishop, a recent graduate of FSU’s orchestral conducting program, and James Chang, one of the program’s current students, will conduct the concert.
