March is Florida Archaeology Month! Join the Bureau of Archaeological Research (BAR) on March 18 and 19 for a special public program at the B. Calvin Jones Center for Archaeological Research, located at 1001 DeSoto Park Drive, in Tallahassee, Florida.
On both days, archaeologists from the Florida Bureau of Archaeological Research (BAR), in partnership with the Panhandle Archaeological Society at Tallahassee (PAST) and the Aucilla Research Institute (ARI), will be working on two excavation units located on the property. The two units are intended to highlight different periods in the site’s long history of human occupation, spanning from the time of the sixteenth-century Apalachee village of Anhaica, to the construction of a brick smokehouse in the 1930s. The public are invited to view the excavations, talk to the archaeologists about their work and Florida archaeology, and learn about the history of the site. Special exhibits featuring artifacts from previous state-led excavations will be on display inside the Governor Martin House.
The program is free, open to the public, and runs from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. on both days.
