Archaeology Month at Mission San Luis

Presented by Division of Historical Resources and Mission San Luis at Mission San Luis

March is Florida Archaeology Month! Join the Bureau of Archaeological Research (BAR) on March 25 and 26 for a special public program at Mission San Luis in Tallahassee, Florida.

On both days, archaeologists from the Florida Bureau of Archaeological Research (BAR), and members of the Panhandle Archaeological Society at Tallahassee (PAST) and the Aucilla Research Institute (ARI), will be demonstrating aspects of professional archaeological work on-site, including an active excavation unit and a ground-penetrating radar survey (GPR). The excavation and GPR survey are related to previous work on the site to locate a portion of the Camino Real, which connected San Luis Apalachee with St. Augustine to the east. The public are invited to view the excavations and GPR survey, talk to the archaeologists about their work and Florida archaeology, and learn about the history of the site. Other activities include special displays of artifacts from previous state-led excavations at the mission, tours of the BAR Collections Facility, located on the Mission San Luis campus, and living history interpretation by Mission San Luis staff.

The program runs from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. on both days. Program and tours included with general admission fee to enter the site.
