Spirits of the Passage: The Story of the Transatlantic Slave Trade

Spirits of the Passage: The Story of the Transatlantic Slave Trade

Presented by Museum of Florida History at Museum of Florida History

This powerful exhibition takes visitors through the history of the slave trade and its lasting impact on American society. Beginning on the African continent, the exhibition introduces different cultures through religious and art objects. The story then explores the largest forced migration in history as people were taken from their homelands, packed into the hulls of ships for a harrowing voyage across the Atlantic Ocean, and sold into bondage in the New World. The exhibition features more than 125 artifacts, most recovered from the Henrietta Marie, an English slaving vessel that sank off the coast of the Florida Keys in 1700. Do not miss your opportunity to view this exhibit and take an emotional journey through history that focuses on the devastating human consequences of the slave trade and resilience of enslaved African people.
