Original event description:

The virtual town hall meeting, “Legislative Session Primer: Get Ready to Advocate,” will be held from 12 pm to 1 pm on Wednesday, January 5, 2022, on Zoom. The event is presented by the Council on Culture & Arts (COCA), The Institute for Nonprofit Innovation and Excellence (INIE), and United Partners for Human Services (UPHS).

The Florida legislative session opens on January 11th, and nonprofits will be ready to advocate after participating in this town hall meeting. The event will promote discussion about this year's legislative topics with guest commentator Sabeen Perwaiz and will provide tools and resources for the non-profit sector to more effectively advocate during session.

Sabeen Perwaiz is President & CEO of Florida Nonprofit Alliance (FNA) where she strengthens, promotes and advocates on behalf of Florida’s nonprofit sector. During her tenure, FNA released Florida's first nonprofit economic impact report, individual giving report and nonprofit compensation survey. Prior to joining the organization, Perwaiz was a researcher for Vital Voices Global Partnership, served as Special Projects Manager for Pace Center for Girls, implemented an Early Childhood Education program with Aide et Action in Phnom Penh, Cambodia, and led the Earn Up initiative for the Jacksonville Chamber of Commerce. Perwaiz has been named an Aspen Ideas Scholar, Woman of Influence, 40 under 40, and a National Business Journal Influencer. Since 2012, Perwaiz has led the all-volunteer team for TEDxJacksonville. In 2018, Perwaiz was appointed to Florida's Commission on Community Service among many other professional accomplishments.

“Education and advocacy help pave the path to increased sector efficiency, especially as nonprofits continue to innovate and creatively address community need” explains Kathleen Spehar, Executive Director of COCA. “We’re grateful Sabeen will share the most recent nonprofit sector report, along with timely tips and tools for effective advocacy,”

“Public policy can play a powerful role in making our community just, and it can help nonprofits make important advances that create lasting, positive and transformative policy change,” adds UPHS Executive Director Amber R. Tynan.
